The institution
The chair has seen Chicago change.
It opened in 1927 as Joe’s Barbershop, tied to the old Hyde Park Theatre building. The name changed. The block changed. The work did not.
Three generations of Hyde Park families have had their hair cut here — first haircuts, wedding-day cuts, and the Saturday appointment somebody has kept for thirty years. University students, neighbours, people who moved away and still book when they are back in town.
The conversation matters as much as the cut. That is the part no chain can copy, and the reason people who could get a haircut anywhere still drive to Blackstone Avenue.

Owner & Master Barber
Barbering as art and precision — two things he has never treated as separate.
Ishmael’s passion for barbering began at age twelve, blending his love for art and precision into expressive haircuts. By high school he was booking weekly appointments from a makeshift barbershop in his mother’s bathroom. He earned his cosmetology license in 1992 and joined Hyde Park Hair Salon at twenty — its youngest barber. Over time he mastered his craft, became the shop’s lead barber, and eventually its owner. Under his leadership the shop relocated, expanded its services, and brought together the team working here today. He later earned his barber license as well.

The business officially adopts the Hyde Park Hair Salon name during urban renewal.

Under Ishmael Coye's leadership, the shop moves to 5234 S. Blackstone Avenue.

Mostly neighbours. Teachers, students, tradespeople, families who have been coming for decades.
Along the way the shop has also cut the hair of Chicagoans whose names travelled further — athletes, entertainers, and public figures, among them Barack Obama, a patron here long before the rest of the world was paying attention.
We do not make much of it inside the shop. A haircut is a haircut. But it is part of why people come from other countries to stand on this block, and it is a history worth telling properly.
